The current market is in a "choppy" state. For the undisciplined, this sideways movement is a source of anxiety, a reason to bury their talents and wait for "better days." But for the strategic steward, this is the ultimate Filtering Event. As someone who is full-time managing their own portfolio, I’ve learned that volatility is actually a gift; it is the market’s way of performing a "Root Cause Analysis" on every asset in your portfolio.
While the S&P 500 struggles for direction, those of us who prioritize Market Logic over Market Emotion find ourselves in a position to dominate. This isn’t about "getting lucky", it’s about the disciplined deployment of capital when the rest of the world is paralyzed by the noise.
The Myth of the Easy Win For the past few years, the market felt like a game played on "Easy Mode." If you bought the dip, you won. But that era is over. We have entered a season where "Quantity" is being replaced by "Quality." In my work managing my portfolio, which has seen a 61.7% return in 2025, the secret has been about identifying Relative Strength.
In a choppy market, you aren't looking for what is cheap; you are looking for what refuses to break. This is a logic game. If the broad market drops 2% and a specific asset stays flat or gains, the market is telling you something. It is identifying a leader.
A choppy market is the "Boot Camp" for your portfolio. It disqualifies the "Zombie Companies" that only survived because interest rates were low. I see this as a necessary clearing of the field. High interest rates are a "Force Multiplier" for companies with strong balance sheets. They are killing the competition for us.
The Theology of the Trade Many people think that "Biblical Stewardship" means being passive or overly cautious. They point to the servant who buried his talent to keep it "safe." But if you read the text, the master called that servant "wicked and lazy." Why? Because he let Fear dictate his strategy instead of Logic.
The servant who doubled his talents didn't do it by gambling; he did it by engaging with the market. True stewardship is the "Sober-Minded" (technical) analysis of opportunity. It is about having the courage to plant seeds in the mud because you know the harvest is coming.
The Gap Analysis of 2026 In Business Analysis, we perform a Gap Analysis to see where a company is versus where it should be. Right now, there is a massive gap between the "Price" of many assets and their "Value."
The noise of the news cycle creates "Price" volatility. The logic of the business creates "Value" stability.
If your strategy is built on a "wish," this market will break you. If it is built on a repeatable, data-driven logic, the kind that outperfroms the S&P by 4x, then this choppiness is simply the noise of your competitors falling behind.
The Bottom Line Stop checking your P&L every ten minutes and start auditing your Process. Are you a "Soldier" reacting to every wave, or are you the "Commander" navigating the ship based on the charts?
The filter is working. Make sure you’re on the right side of it.
